Surah Az-Zalzalah

The Earthquake
Surah 99 8 ayat Revealed in Medina
The earth shakes out her burdens, and every deed is seen: an atom's weight of good, and an atom's weight of evil.

Featured in the app’s pause: 99:7, 99:8.

why this surah matters

Az-Zalzalah compresses the end of the world into eight verses: the earth convulses, throws out her burdens, and reports her news, because your Lord inspired her. The ground you walk on is a witness with a memory.

Then the scales (99:7-8): whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it. Nothing rounds down to zero.

living Az-Zalzalah
Atoms accumulate

The dhikr you almost skipped, the single verse you read, the one scroll you resisted. Atom-weights, all recorded, all seen. Small is not insignificant; small is the unit of measurement.

The earth is watching too

The ground reports what was done on it. Let some patch of earth know you for sujud, not only for pacing while you scroll.

Audit in atoms

Instead of judging a whole day as good or wasted, count atoms tonight: three small goods, one small evil to drop tomorrow. That is the surah's own accounting style.

When the earth is shaken with a mighty quake,
AZ-ZALZALAH · 99:1
and the earth throws out its burdens[1],
AZ-ZALZALAH · 99:2
and man says[2], “What is the matter with it?”
AZ-ZALZALAH · 99:3
On that Day it will recount all its news,
AZ-ZALZALAH · 99:4
because your Lord has inspired it [to do so].
AZ-ZALZALAH · 99:5
On that Day all people will come forward in separate groups to be shown their deeds[3].
